Brighton and Hove has a large and active community and voluntary sector. Until 2003, whilst there were some good guesses about exactly how large it might be and how much it might be valued at, they were just guesses.
In an attempt to measure more effectively the impact of the sector, the first ever Economic and Social Audit was commissioned and carried out.
It's headline findings were impressive, suggesting that there are between 1400 and 1500 charities and voluntary groups in Brighton and Hove, with the total value of the work they do estimated to be £29 million a year.

This piece of work is about to be updated, starting once again with the promotion of a survey to encourage as many groups as possible to take part. You can see more details, and wait for the survey to appear online on the Audit pages of the Community and Voluntary Sector Forum's website.
