Management Committees and Trustees
The roles of committee members
Every community organisation has a governing body, a group of people
which manages its affairs. This is most commonly referred to as the
management committee. However your own group may use a
different name, such as executive committee or steering group. A small
or informal group may not have a separate committee and, in this case,
its entire membership is the governing body.
Broadly, the committee's job is to ensure that the group:
- does what it was set up to do
- has enough money and does not get into debt
- is well run
The Resource Centre have several information sheets on:

If you run a larger organisation that wants to, or already, has a contract or contracts with statutory agencies to deliver services it is important that your Board is run effectively, is in control of your organisation and fully realises its responsibilities. There are now National Standards in Governance and a Code of Good Governance for the sector. These can be downloaded free of charge from the Governance Hub website. www.governancehub.org.uk
B&H Community Initiatives can offer support around a Board Self Assessment, the development of good governance and the development of board competencies.
