Policy and Procedure
Model Policies and Procedures for Staff Employment
Employing staff means that you incur a number of legal obligations. Your policies and procedures will indicate how you will carry out these obligations. You need to comply with all employment laws. Employers need to have a staff handbook that contains all of these policies and procedures. It is therefore best to obtain a set of model that are up to date and are legally compliant. This is usually the starting point when you by buying in HR support from a HR professional or company. You can contact BHCI for an information leaflet on where to obtain HR support and the things that you should consider when becoming an employer. Membership of Sussex Enterprise entitles you to access to HR support which includes a set of model HR policies. Sussex Enterprise also manages Business Link (see below).
Business Link is an agency set up by the Government to help businesses. This site will give you some important information about your legal responsibilities and employee rights and entitlements. Business Link can often supply free business advice.
ACAS is another government agency that gives employers and employees information about rights, obligations and good practice. Acas gives guidance in relation to organisation procedures for important employment issues. If you are new to these responsibilities you should buy in professional support though.
The Workforce Hub also has information about employment practice, how to develop your staff.
National Occupational Standards can also be used to promote good employment practice.
