Details have been announced of a new Government-backed global volunteering scheme offering for 18-25 year-olds from less advantaged backgrounds the opportunity to live, work and learn about life in poorer countries.
Over the next three years 2,500 young adults will be sponsored to do voluntary work in a developing country and raise awareness of development issues in the UK.
The £10m scheme is backed by the Department for International Development (DFID) and will be run in partnership by Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and BUNAC. Volunteers will be involved in a 10 week programme of grass roots development work and must meet a combination of criteria relating to previous education, employment, benefits and travel. Placements will start in summer 2008.
Department for Local Communities and Local Government
The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has today published their responses to the consultation "Disabled Facilities Grant: The Package of Changes to Modernise the Programme".
In 2004, the Government launched a major cross departmental review of the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). Bristol University was commissioned to carry out an independent study of the programme and suggest recommendations for change.
One of the improvements which will be effective immediately will be an increase in the DFG budget of 20% to £146 million in 2008/09. In 2009/10 this will increase again to £156 million and in 2010/11 to £166 million.
More improvements to be effective from April 2008 include:
- maximum grant limit to be raised to £30,000;
- improvements to the means test;
- access to garden grants; and
- Social Housing Grant funding for adaptations to transfer to DFG.
