The long-awaited 2007 Calls for Proposals under the DAPHNE programme have now been issued.The general objective of this programme is to contribute towards the protection of children, young people and women against all forms of violence (including sexual exploitation and trafficking in human beings) to attain a high level of health protection, well being and cohesion. New Environment Policy
An action plan which sets a new direction for government policy on the natural environment has been published by DEFRA.The Ecosystems Approach Action Plan signals a move away from separate natural environment policies on wildlife, water, soil, and air quality towards a more joined-up approach taking account of the natural environment as a whole. Central to the action plan is the idea that living things and their physical environment depend on each other - changes in one part of our environment can have consequences, positive and negative, on another. To guide policy-makers and economists in valuing these environmental benefits, DEFRA has produced an Introductory Guide to Valuing Ecosystem Services. Defra Greener Living Fund

DEFRA LAUNCH GREENER LIVING FUNDDEFRA has launched a new fund to promote greener living - the Greener Living Fund (GLF). A total of ?6 million is being made available to third sector organisations to implement programmes that influence pro-environmental behaviours in the wider population. The Fund aims to help individuals and communities in England live more sustainably, thereby reducing their carbon footprint and reducing pressure on natural resources. Funding will be offered to a small number of national delivery partners. The minimum level of grant awarded will be ?200,000 over two years. The deadline for submissions of first stage applications 16 December 2008.

Deparment for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs - Bio-Energy Capiltal Grants Scheme

?10 - ?15m scheme to support the installation of biomass-fuelled heat and combined heat and power projects in the industrial, commercial and community sectors including local authorities and schools. Variable grant rate up to a maximum of $0% of the difference in cost compared with installation of fossil fuel alternatives. Grants will range from ?25,000 to ?1m. Next bidding round will close on 9th March.

Low Carbon Buildings Programme: Phase 2
Phase 2 of the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP2) supports the installation of microgeneration technologies for organisations in the UK public and not-for-profit sectors. Grants are available for the purchase and installation of: solar thermal hot water, solar photovoltaics, wind turbines, ground source heat pumps, automated wood pellet stoves and wood fuelled boiler systems. The LCBP grants are managed by Building Research Establishment Ltd (BRE) on behalf of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).For further information go to:

Every Child Matters: Change for Children
2008-09 sees ?11 million available under this programme which supports projects working to deliver the outcomes under Every Child Matters. Two types of funding are available:? Strategic grants for projects operating over three government regions are available for capacity building activities, networking support and specialist services ? Project grants support innovative approaches (across two regions) to opening up services to hard to reach groups such as young people with disabilities, or young people from ethnic minority and faith communities. Registered charities are eligible to apply for grants (levels currently undefined) and partnership applications are particularly welcome. The deadline for Expressions of Interest is 1 October. Family Pathfinders Project: Imminent Deadline
The Family Pathfinders and Extended Pathfinders for Young Carers project, announced in Aiming High for Children: Supporting Families, has been launched.The programme is expected to support between 12 and 15 Family Pathfinders with a total of ?13 million funding for a period of three years to enable approaches to become fully embedded. Each pathfinder will receive funding of up to ?780,000 for the three-year period: up to ?180,000 in financial year 2008-09, up to ?300,000 in 2009-10 and up to ?300,000 in 2010-11. A further total of ?3 million will be available for the Extended Family Pathfinder for Young Carers component of the work. These areas will each receive up to an additional ?400,000 over the three-year period: up to ?92,500 in year one, up to ?146,500 in year two, and up to ?161,000 in year three. Local authorities in England, with their partners (eg the third sector, schools, anti-social behaviour teams, Learning and Skills Councils etc.), are invited to apply to become a Family Pathfinder. The Big Lottery Fund is delivering myplace on behalf of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). Myplace aims to deliver world class youth facilities driven by the active participation of young people and their view and needs.Funded projects must deliver all the following outcomes: more young people, parents and communities feel that young people have exciting and safe places to go in their leisure time where they can get involved in an attractive range of activities; more young people, particularly the most disadvantaged, participate in positive leisure time activities that support their personal and social development; more young people have access to information, advice and support services from within places they feel comfortable; stronger partnership working between local authorities, third, private and public sector partners to plan, deliver and operate financially sustainable youth facilities with and for young people. Children, Young People and Families Grant Programme
The grant programme funds work of national significance to improve outcomes for children, young people, and families. These outcomes are embedded in the Children Act 2004 and the Every Child Matters: Change for Children Programme.2008-09 Grant: The amount of funding available in 2008-2009 is approximately ?11m. Funding is available for both strategic and project grants. Organisations interested in Children, Young People and Families Grant funding will need to submit an expression of interest form no later than Monday 1 October 2007. Connecting Communities Plus - Community Grants
Supports practical action to help improve race equality and community cohesion. Aimed at locally fun and managed voluntary and community organisations with an income of less than ?50,000 per year, run by volunteers or with one full time or two part time paid staff. Third Sector Strategic Partners Scheme
The Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) aims to establish strategic partnering relationships with organisations that pursue objectives which are in line with their priorities and who operate at a national level in supporting local action. CLG is inviting Expressions of Interest from suitable third sector organisations and partnerships to be considered for strategic partner status and funding.Expressions of Interest by 5pm on Thursday 20th September.

Community Leadership Fund - Deadline extended
This grant fund is intended to support work that will build the capacity of individuals, organisations and communities to take the lead on tackling violent extremist influences. The funding will be focused on the following areas:Capacity of organisations and communities Supporting Muslim young people Supporting Muslim women Capacity of Muslim faith leaders Local forums against extremism and Islamophobia Funding for the first four strands of work will be limited to projects which have national reach/significance. Funding for the fifth strand of work will go to projects which are delivered locally. This fund will complement the much larger scale work being taken forward by many local authorities. Activating Places of Change
This grants scheme offers revenue funding to projects in receipt of funding from the Communities and Local Government?s Hostels Capital Improvement Programme (HCIP). The purpose of the grants will be to pump prime the activity and innovation that goes alongside the CLG?s approach of using the HCIP funding to ensure that services become ?Places of Change?.The grants are divided into 3 levels: ? small grants under ?2,500 ? medium sized grants ?2,500 - ?5,000 ? large grants ?5,001 - ?20,000 The application form should be completed and returned to Homeless Link by 5pm on the 27 July 2007.

Discretionary funding for voluntary organisations to do work of national significance that supports the outcomes of the 'Every Child Matters: Change for Children' programme. The programme is long-term, strategic and is for organisations to apply for funding that improves outcomes for children, young people and families. Closing Date is 15th November 2006

Global Volunteering Scheme

Details have been announced of a new Government-backed global volunteering scheme offering for 18-25 year-olds from less advantaged backgrounds the opportunity to live, work and learn about life in poorer countries.

Over the next three years 2,500 young adults will be sponsored to do voluntary work in a developing country and raise awareness of development issues in the UK.

The £10m scheme is backed by the Department for International Development (DFID) and will be run in partnership by Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and BUNAC. Volunteers will be involved in a 10 week programme of grass roots development work and must meet a combination of criteria relating to previous education, employment, benefits and travel. Placements will start in summer 2008.

Disabled Facilities Grants - Improvement to Programme

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has today published their responses to the consultation "Disabled Facilities Grant: The Package of Changes to Modernise the Programme".

In 2004, the Government launched a major cross departmental review of the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). Bristol University was commissioned to carry out an independent study of the programme and suggest recommendations for change.

One of the improvements which will be effective immediately will be an increase in the DFG budget of 20% to £146 million in 2008/09. In 2009/10 this will increase again to £156 million and in 2010/11 to £166 million.

More improvements to be effective from April 2008 include:

  • maximum grant limit to be raised to £30,000;
  • improvements to the means test;
  • access to garden grants; and
  • Social Housing Grant funding for adaptations to transfer to DFG.

Grants for Walking Busses
A new scheme to provide grants of ?1,000 a year for 3 years to state-funded primary schools in England who want to set up walking buses. This could be used to pay for a teaching assistant for 2 hours a week to organise and administer a walking bus, and to seek children and parent volunteers for the walking bus. Smaller grants (?500 a year) are available to support other school-based initiatives, for example Walk on Wednesday or Go for Gold, to increase walking to and from school.One-page application form, to be sent to walkingbuses@dft.gsi.gov.uk Closing date for applications is 31 January 2007.
